Salutations!

I’m Austin Eamnarangkool — ethnomusicologist, composer, arranger, and guitarist based in Los Angeles. I’ve shipped music for 100+ projects across a variety of mediums, and have studied under established composers and musicians in the video game, avant-garde, rock, classical, and jazz scenes. 

These days, I’m shifting my career toward where it’s always pointed: music for media.

To that effect, I write what I call Transcultural Hybrid Scoring:

Weaving in elements of rock, metal, orchestral, and/or electronic textures with infusions of global traditions that inspire me as an ethnomusicologist. I aim to do this whenever applicable and if appropriate.

Though I am proficient in a wide breadth of musical styles, I aim to become a composer who focuses on the ethical incorporation of this type o music, as I believe video games serve as a great catalyst for expanding one's (cultural) perspectives.

I earned my M.A. in Ethnomusicology in 2017, but also earned a B.A. in Music Composition and  B.S. in Management Science (think interdisciplinary Econ with some STEM sprinkled in) from the University of California, San Diego, where I studied under Lei Liang, Chinary Ung, Cecil Lytle, Kamau Kenyatta, and Anthony Davis. While there, I studied jazz in Paris, co-founded Duly Noted, a competitive a cappella group, and began composing and arranging for ensembles across the country. My over 100 vocal arrangements have since been performed by groups such as Chapman University’s Soundcheck, Oklahoma City University’s OCUpella, UC Santa Cruz’s Acquire, and nationally recognized show choirs like John Burroughs Powerhouse (a group of which I am an alumnus). 

As a composer for film and media in my undergraduate days, I’ve been commissioned by UCSD organizations such as ArtPower, Triton TV, and the Game Development Studio, as well as by independent filmmakers. My concert works have been performed by groups including the Del Sol String Quartet and UCSD ensembles. 

Outside of music, I’ve worn many hats — teacher, PR and marketing, corporate admin, and various service jobs (server/restaurant, barista, retail, custodial, and events). It’s a resume that looks a little chaotic on paper but works well in practice: I adapt quickly, work well with diverse teams, and bring creativity and broad perspectives to my work.

Performance has always been part of my world, too — from intimate restaurant gigs to auditoriums of 1,000+ as a guitarist and/or ensemble singer.

Fun facts: I unironically enjoy long walks on the beach. Also: black coffee, spicy food (read: all food), photography, gaming, and crafting modular travel itineraries (because you never know when you need to pivot). I speak four languages at varying levels: English (native/fluent), Thai (speaking), Spanish (waning proficiency), and Korean (intermediate).
